I will soon be posting an article I wrote on the importance of understanding the difference between training and testing you dog.
I hear many trainer and handlers say ” I dont know what my dog will do in that situation, lets try it”. This is testing. Testing is ok if you have a controlled enviroment, and a training plan for when it backfires on the dog.
More to come soon!

I will be posting an article on here very soon going over the pro / cons of balistic vests for canines.
I think the invention of the balistic vest for the canine was a well intentioned idea. Statistics show we loose almost a dozen dogs a year to gunfire. I would like to say early on that I am not against vests for dogs, what I am disappointed in, is the grant programs that provide these vests to police dogs. We loose far more dogs to heat in cruisers than gunfire, by almost 4 fold. I do not know of anyone doing grants for heat alarms. Many officers do not have the ability to deploy their dog from their car by remote, another great grant idea, remote door releases.
I recently trained a single purpose drug dog for a local small college campus. The canine selected for this department was a little blonde lab, single purpose narcotics.
The handler for some reason applied for a grant for a vest for this dog, who will never be off leash, does not bite, will never conduct a search for a hiding suspect, and I can assure will never need a vest. When I heard the handler say he had applied for the vest, I expressed my concern that it was taking a vest away from a patrol dog that may need it, however I was not overly concerned, due to the fact that I never thought the grant would be approved due to the lack of need. Well was I suprised….. only 1 week later, approved and on the way!
It is a shame that the good hearted people to raise money for these dogs do not do some researcha nd see where and why we are looking police service dogs.
